The Rwandan High Commission in Mozambique, in collaboration with the Rwandan Community Abroad (RCA) leadership, held “Umuganura Day” on August 27, 2023, in Matola, Maputo Province, Mozambique, the largest suburb of the Mozambique capital, Maputo, next to its westernmost side.

Matola is well-known for having a sizable Rwandan expatriate community. More than 500 individuals attended the event, which included entertainment activities and talks, in addition to sharing.

In his remarks, Claude Nikobisanzwe, Rwanda’s High Commissioner in Mozambique, expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for successfully arranging the event, as well as those who contributed to its success.

He reminded the audience of the origins of “Umuganura,” a day on which Rwandans would enjoy what they had gathered while also supporting others who had bad harvests. The Ambassador also urged diaspora members to remember fellow Rwandans who died in floods and landslides, as well as community members in Mozambique whose stores caught fire.

He also urged them to continue encouraging unity and cohesiveness among Rwandans, which is a cornerstone for any country’s growth and has resulted in peaceful coexistence for the past twenty-nine years (29). He also advised residents to teach their children Kinyarwanda and other cultural traditions.

Ndabarasa Theophile, the representative of the Rwandan Community in Mozambique, expressed his gratitude to the Rwandan community for their large attendance at the event and urged them to always participate in such events organized by the High Commission in collaboration with diaspora members.

He stated that getting to know each other and reconnecting with their country is beneficial. The gathering concluded with a supper made in the Rwandan traditional way.
