Following a one-year peacekeeping assignment under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), 140 Rwandan police officers returned home on Tuesday, June 10.

On behalf of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) leadership, Commissioner of Police (CP) Yahya Kamunuga, Commissioner for Peace Support Operations, greeted the officers at Kigali International Airport. They are members of Rwanda Protection Support Unit One—ninth rotation (RWAPSU1-9). RWAPSU1-10, which had left earlier that day under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) James Karasi, took the place of the returning contingent, which was led by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ildephonse Rutagambwa.

High-profile national and international figures, such as the prime minister, the president of the national assembly, top judges, and the head of the MINUSCA Police Component, are principally protected by the PSU.
CP Kamunuga praised the officers for a successful tour of duty that was characterized by their commitment and professionalism.

“The leadership of the Rwanda National Police extends a warm welcome to you upon your return and recognizes the commitment, tenacity, and professionalism you displayed throughout your assignment. This attitude makes it possible for our organization and the nation to consistently fulfill its mission both domestically and internationally. “Back home, the duty continues,” CP Kamunuga stated.

CSP Rutangambwa highlighted the importance of collaboration and community involvement in their peacekeeping endeavors as they reflected on their mission.

Our solidarity and dedication to service were the foundation of our success. Along with our primary security duties, we also actively took part in community development projects like environmental preservation, blood donation, water supply, medical treatment, and communal work (Umuganda) in coordination with local security forces. Building confidence and a solid cooperation with the local people were greatly aided by these efforts, according to CSP Rutangambwa.
