In the continuing peace talks between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda has voiced alarm over what it describes as “malicious leaks,” warning that such activities could damage the fragile progress being achieved.

Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, was dissatisfied with media leaks in a statement that was released on X (previously Twitter).

“I hope that those, parties to the ongoing negotiations for a peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, who are maliciously leaking unilateral proposals and evolving working documents to the press, understand that they can jeopardise the success of the Washington talks,” Nduhungirehe warned.

His comments followed a Reuters news agency article that quoted anonymous sources to assert that the United States is attempting to negotiate a deal that would see Rwanda remove its troops from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo prior to the signing of any peace accord.

Kigali, which views armed organizations operating in eastern Congo, especially the FDLR, as a major threat to Rwanda’s national security, is apparently incensed by the proposed stipulation.

International mediators in Washington are mediating the ongoing talks, which are a component of larger regional initiatives to put an end to years of violent strife and instability in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Rwanda, however, insists that any long-term solution must deal with the underlying issues that lead to instability, such as the persistent existence of hostile armed groups along its border.

The disclosure has sparked concerns that efforts to reach a significant agreement may be jeopardized if the parties’ trust is damaged.

Rwanda has always underlined that mutual commitment to resolving the concerns of all parties and balanced conversation are necessary for a lasting peace.
