This time period, especially from Rwanda’s steep slopes and/or wetlands, raises a red warning for families living in unstable homes.
According to Rwanda’s weather forecast, the rainy season, which lasts from September through December, is returned. According to projections, the season might be significantly more severe than previous ones, with a combined 800 millimeters of rain in some locations.
The city of Kigali is particularly aware that the worst could happen if precautions are not taken, having previously recorded multiple cases of fatalities brought on by floods and landslides.
Additionally, Vice Mayor Urujeni Martine, who oversees socioeconomic affairs for the City of Kigali, stated in an exclusive interview last week that they cannot relax after the floods that claimed more than 100 lives in the Western and Northern Provinces in May.
“We were warned that should we take the matter lightly, given the severity of the rain, we may see similar fatalities soon even in Kigali,” she said.
The city selected 7361 families that are intended to leave, strengthening a program that was launched in 2016 to move individuals in high-risk areas. While another 3131 households had till September 15 to save their life, 4230 of them relocated in May of this year.
